Justice Antonin Scalia Speaks About the Contributions of Italian Americans In the Early Years of the Republic At a recent lecture about Neapolitan philosopher Gaetano Filangieri (1752-1788), and his possible influence on shaping of the thinking of our nation’s founders through his correspondence with Benjamin Franklin, Justice Scalia also took the opportunity to speak about the artistic contributions made by Italian Americans to the nascent Republic. Justice Scalia mentioned among others, Constantino Brumidi, Enrico Calsicci, Antonio Cappellano, and Luigi Persico, whose statue, “Discovery of America” is located in the U.S. Capitol. Justice Scalia was introduced by Judge Giannicola Sinisi, the Justice Attachè at the Italian Embassy in Washington who organized the event at the Library of Congress. Scalia’s remarks and those of Italian Senator Marcello Pera, who also spoke about Filangieri, will be published later.
