Memorial Day: Honoring All Who Died in The Cause Of Freedom We Praise and Honor Especially Those Italian Americans Who Gave Their All In Service To America May 22, 2012 ~ Today we remember and commemorate all those American heroes who gave their lives in the cause of freedom. It is easy to forget, as we immerse ourselves in our daily lives, that millions of lives have been forever changed because loved ones, friends, have died to defend America's freedom. (Pictured at left is John Basilone, a Marine sergeant from New Jersey who fought at the Battle of Guadalcanal in 1942. He is the only enlisted Marine in U.S. history to receive the nation's two highest military honors: the Navy Cross for valor and the U.S. Congressional Medal of Honor for his service in World War II. Basilone was killed in action during the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945.)
REMEMBERING: Luigi Palma di Cesnola, the first Italian American to receive the U.S. Congressional Medal of Honor. He was a Union general in the Civil War, and later became the first director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. |CiaoAmerica.net| |
