The American-Italian Coalition of Organizations, Inc. (AMICO) was formed in 1978 by a group of Italian-American civic leaders with a goal of advancing the interest of the city's two million residents of Italian descent. In the spring of 1979, AMICO was incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation and it was successful, that year, in obtaining city funded contracts to operate its day care program in Carroll Gardens and a senior citizens program in Bensonhurst/Borough Park. The AMICO Court Street Day Care Center serves 60 pre-school and 30 school-age children. The AMICO 59th Street Senior Center provides a full range of nutritional, educational, social and recreational services for approximately 400 older persons each day.
